  • Contemporary Prescription Compounding

Contemporary Prescription Compounding is a 16 hour course and the overall goal of this program is to provide the pharmacist who has minimal or no experience in contemporary prescription compounding with a theoretical and practical basis on which to build a successful non-sterile prescription compounding practice that complies with Good Compounding Practices (GCPs) espoused by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and which leads to enhanced pharmaceutical care.

  • Aseptic Technique Compounding Course

Aseptic Technique Compounding is a 16 hour course and this practiced based course is designed to prepare pharmacists and technicians to strengthen their knowledge base in Aseptic Technique. At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to demonstrate the proper use of certain specialized pharmacy equipment and of aseptic technique used in compounding prescription medications

  • Women’s Health Compounding

Women’s Health Compounding is a 16 hour course and the overall goal of this program is to further prepare pharmacists to strengthen their knowledge base in caring for women patients. Participants will be able to demonstrate a deeper understanding of a number of women’s issues, medications used to treat these issues, clinical guidelines for the treatment of women’s health issues, and side effects of these medications.

  • Compounding Pain Medications - What are the Options?

Compounding Pain Medications is a 15 hour course and the overall goal of this practice based program is to provide the pharmacist and/or technician the ability to identify the mechanisms of pain and the drugs which effect those pathways. To understand how the layman and the health professional approaches the selection of preparations to treat pain: drug, dose, and dosage form and to help them identify the principles used in the compounding of products to treat pain: the drug, its use, the dosage form and the route.

  • High Risk Sterile Compounding

High Risk Sterile Compounding is a 16 hour course and this course represents a great need in health care and will provide the participants with the knowledge of preparation and quality control tests for sterile products, such as validation testing, membrane filtration, pyrogen tests, BET (bacterial endotoxin test) and others. This course will also examine wet heat sterilization in the Autoclave, as well as dry heat sterilization/depyrogenation, and filter integrity. Also covered will be the USP <797> guidelines. This course will train pharmacists in the technique and preparation of sterile drug products.

  • Compounding for Pharmacy Technicians

Compounding for Pharmacy Technicians is a 16 hour course and this course will introduce participants to pharmacy compounding and is designed to provide the pharmacy technician who has minimal or no experience in prescription compounding with a theoretical and practical basis that complies with Good Compounding Practices (GCPs) espoused by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and which leads to enhanced pharmaceutical care.

  • Basic Veterinary Compounding Course

Basic Veterinary Compounding is a 14 hour course and this course is designed to introduce participants to veterinary pharmacy compounding. This program provides the fundamental techniques for compounding medications for animals, as well as establishing and marketing a veterinary pharmacy practice.

  • Aseptic Technique in Veterinary Pharmacy

Aseptic Technique in Veterinary Pharmacy is a 15.5 hour course and this course is designed to provide training in the aseptic processing of sterile veterinary preparations including vials, ophthalmic and infusion solutions. Participants will receive training in aseptic technique, facility requirements, environmental monitoring, filtration, quality control and filter integrity testing, sterility and sterility assurance and the proper use of equipment and supplies used to prepare sterile preparations.

Member pharmacists present their experiences in their compounding practices including: formulas, marketing ideas, anecdotal reports and practices associated with compounding.

Equipment Table:
PCCA team members demonstrate and explain the vast selection of equipment, devices and supplies available to the member pharmacist. Included is a new product table to display the very latest in equipment added to the selections.

Legal Update:
Presented by the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacy, pharmacists are made aware of the latest developments concerning compounding pharmacy, including legal requirements and regulatory issues.

Primary and Aseptic Compounding Training Classes
In addition to seminars and symposiums, PCCA members have the opportunity to attend training classes in the PCCA's state-of-the-art compounding laboratory in Houston. Each year PCCA trains licensed pharmacists, as well as pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students and pharmacy professors. The compounding classes are accredited by ACPE and are offered throughout the year.

Primary Compounding Training:
The four day Primary Compounding Training, awarding 30 hours of continuing pharmaceutical education credit, provides hands-on training in practical compounding procedures, such as solutions, gels, creams, lotions, sticks, suppositories, troches, encapsulations, minor aseptic, unit dose compounding, enteric coating and lollipops. The class also provides instruction in compounding equipment, discusses legal issues and the importance of quality control, and covers helpful marketing techniques.

Aseptic Compounding Training:
The second course offered by PCCA is Aseptic Compounding Training. Pharmacists in attendance receive 40 hours (4.0 CEUs) of continuing education credit, including 24 hours prerequisite course work and 16 hours hands-on lab practice (includes 1 hour [.1 CEU] of law). The two-day course is an intensive hands-on experience and covers the latest USP and ASHP guidelines and standards. Focus is placed upon quality assurance of the compounding environment, equipment, end-product and the personnel involved. Click here for the 2005 Aseptic Compounding Training schedule.

Training Facilities:
The hands-on portion of the training course for our member pharmacists, pharmacy students and technicians is conducted in our compounding laboratory. The lab is equipped with 81 compounding workstations, a closed circuit television system to facilitate demonstrations by the instructor, and a classroom for lectures and slide presentations. Our training program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and is presented by our staff pharmacists, technicians and Ph.D.s.

PCCA Institute Pharmacy Boot Camp
Current pharmacy students may utilize PCCA's expertise and training through this course. The intent of Boot Camp is to introduce students to the unique and novel dosage forms utilized by today’s compounding pharmacists; to enlighten them as to the reality and feasibility of opening their own compounding pharmacy; and to inspire them to think of compounding as a viable, rewarding, and fulfilling career pathway.

Two full days of lecture and hands-on laboratory work provide a basic understanding of the skills, tools and equipment used in Contemporary Compounding. Students complete eleven dosage forms they take home with them, focusing on dosage forms such as lollipops, lip balms, troches, and transdermal delivery systems. Demonstrations of modern compounding equipment include the Ointment Mill, Electro Mortar-Pestle, Homogenizer, and Heat Sealer.
